Well it has been another great week so far in Houston. I was talking to one of my cooperating teachers today and she said out of the 24 students in our preschool section, only 4 of them are originally from America. I realized there were many international students, but I had never put two and two together until now. At Yorkshire, one of the moms puts on this "Olympic Celebration" which basically is a cultural celebration, in which each student is represented by his or her flag. This mom apparently is just soooo into this thing that she plans out all of these "Olympic-like" activities for the students to participate in. I am so excited to see how this whole thing works, but everyone says it is the most amazing thing ever. I'll keep "y'all" posted..... [just thought I'd throw that in there ;) ]
Speaking of culture, I have been experiencing the interesting foods the students bring in for lunch....Seaweed, dumplings, weird organic crap...I'll just continue bringing my PB & J.
Tomorrow we go to the farm. The "Urban Farm" is what I'm told...should be interesting if we even end up going. It is supposed to thunderstorm in the morning, so we will just have to see. I have to tell you all this though...yesterday, for show and tell the preschoolers were supposed to bring in something related to the farm. This one little boy brought in a tractor and it had a plow on the back. One of the teachers, yes teachers, asked, "Brittany, is this thing a combine, or what is it?" as she pointed to the plow. I just laughed and explained to her and the students what it actually was used for. I'm not in good ole rural Iowa anymore....
Well tonight Joe told us he would take us out for dinner. As I walked downstairs Shirley met me at the door and handed me two of her four "solo cups of red wine" and said, We are meeting Joe and one of his business friends outside." So, we jumped in the vehicle and drank red wine, in a solo cup, on the way to a restaurant...BooZe CruZin! Let me tell you, I am experiencing so many NEW things! Anyway, he took us to this place called the Barbeque Inn....DELICIOUS. I had the best ribs... like I said, they sure know how to keep me full of delicious, unhealthy food. Anyway, after we were walking out of the restaurant I saw this security guard walking around, so I said, "What is that security guard doing walkin' around the parking lot? Patroling it or something?" Joe goes, "Yep, that's exactly what hes doing...we're in what ya call the "nigga neighborhood..." So, apparently I won't be venturing there by myself anytime soon.
